Why We’re Falling in Love with Autumn Weddings in Cornwall & Devon
Written by Jessica Baber – Engagement Coordinator at Wedding Venues in Cornwall & Devon and wedding business owner (Tide the Knot Wedding Planning)
From rich seasonal colour palettes to candlelit celebrations and locally sourced feasts, here’s why autumn is one of our favourite seasons for a wedding in the South West.
There’s something undeniably special about an autumn wedding. The colours become richer, the evenings feel cosier, and there’s a natural sense of occasion that comes with bringing everyone together as the seasons change.
Here in Cornwall and Devon, autumn brings its own kind of magic. Think golden countryside, dramatic coastal skies, historic country houses and characterful barns, all providing a beautiful backdrop for a wedding that feels completely personal.
Between Helen and I, we know weddings. And while every season has its appeal, there are plenty of reasons why we’re falling in love with autumn weddings all over again.
1. The colour palettes: rich, warm and effortlessly elegant
Autumn is the perfect opportunity to embrace colour. Think earthy terracotta, deep burgundy, chocolate brown, burnt orange, warm caramel and softer shades of olive green. These tones bring depth and texture to a wedding design without needing to feel overly themed or traditional.
One of our favourite things about autumn styling is how naturally it works with the surroundings. In a countryside setting, rich colours complement the landscape, while in a historic venue, they can bring out the warmth of the interiors and architectural details.
For inspiration, explore Tredudwell Manor near Fowey, with its historic estate and beautiful countryside setting, or Pynes House in Devon, where timeless country-house elegance lends itself beautifully to a more refined autumn palette.
Our advice? Choose two or three key colours and build your styling around them. Bring them through your flowers, stationery, linens and table details, rather than trying to introduce every autumn shade at once. The result will feel considered, cohesive and completely yours.
2. The food: seasonal ingredients and generous feasting
If there’s one thing we love about autumn weddings, it’s the opportunity to make food a real part of the experience. As the weather cools, there's something particularly inviting about generous sharing platters, beautifully prepared seasonal vegetables, slow-cooked dishes and comforting desserts. And living in the South West means we have some wonderful local produce to celebrate. From Cornish seafood and seasonal vegetables to Devon's fantastic growers and producers, there’s plenty of inspiration close to home.
For couples who want their menu to feel relaxed, thoughtful and full of flavour, Dish Cornwall champions seasonal, locally sourced ingredients, with bespoke menus ranging from elegant plated meals to sharing platters. Over in Devon, Fig and Smoke Event Catering creates menus inspired by the season and tailored to each couple.
From our experience, the best wedding menus are the ones that reflect the people getting married. Autumn simply gives you another wonderful way to do that.
3. The venues: character, countryside and cosy corners
When people picture autumn weddings, rustic barns and roaring log burners often spring to mind. And we can certainly see why. There's something about a characterful barn, a historic manor house or a country estate that feels particularly inviting at this time of year. You can make the most of the surrounding landscape while creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere indoors.
Cornwall weddings venues offer plenty of variety, from countryside estates and restored barns to coastal hotels and intimate spaces full of character. In Devon, wedding venues range from rolling rural landscapes and historic country houses to secluded estates made for a whole weekend of celebrations.
A few places worth exploring include:
Launcells Barton, near Bude in North Cornwall, combines a historic manor house with a beautiful barn and wooded countryside surroundings.
Rumleigh Farm, in the Tamar Valley, offers a peaceful rural setting with a focus on organic farming and a relaxed countryside atmosphere.
Pynes House, near Exeter, brings timeless country-house elegance to a wedding weekend, with accommodation on site.
Polmanter Weddings, in St Ives, only offers their wedding packages through the colder months, a relaxed, picturesque setting designed for Autumn and Winter weddings.
As a venue owner, Helen knows that the setting is about much more than how a space looks in photographs. The flow between rooms, the available indoor spaces and the way guests move through the day all matter. When viewing autumn wedding venues, ask to see how the spaces work together throughout the day, not just where you'll hold your ceremony. Think about the drinks reception, dining, dancing and those quieter corners where guests can take a moment away from the party.
4. The lighting: golden afternoons and candlelit evenings
Autumn light has a character all of its own. The softer afternoons, golden tones across the countryside and earlier sunsets can create some truly beautiful moments throughout a wedding day.
In Cornwall, coastal light can be particularly striking, with changing skies and dramatic sea views providing a natural backdrop for photographs. Across Devon, rolling hills, wooded grounds and open countryside offer their own seasonal beauty.
Of course, we can't promise a golden-hour sunset. That's part of the charm of getting married in the South West: the weather is wonderfully unpredictable. But with a little thought, you can make the most of whatever the day brings.
Inside, lighting becomes just as important. Candles on dining tables, warm lamps, festoon lights and carefully placed uplighting can transform a room as the afternoon turns to evening.
Our planning tip is to consider your lighting early, rather than leaving it until the final stages of styling. Those small decisions can have a huge impact on the atmosphere.
5. The seasonal florals: natural texture and beautiful movement
Autumn flowers don't need to be all burnt orange and burgundy. In fact, some of our favourite seasonal designs are the ones that embrace texture, movement and a more natural feel.
Think loose arrangements, interesting foliage, sculptural branches, delicate seed heads and a mix of warm, muted tones. You can create something romantic and understated or go bold with statement arrangements and dramatic installations.
We also love the idea of working with the season rather than against it. Choosing flowers and foliage that are available locally can inspire a more natural design and help your arrangements feel connected to the setting.
For autumn wedding inspiration, take a look at Howie & The Flowers, whose botanical-inspired designs draw on homegrown and locally sourced flowers and foliage, or Perdie's Flowers, who creates tailored floral designs for everything from intimate coastal ceremonies to country-house celebrations.
6. The fashion: layers, texture and a little extra drama
Autumn opens up some lovely possibilities when it comes to wedding fashion. Statement sleeves, velvet details, elegant capes, tailored jackets and beautifully textured fabrics can all add something special to a bridal look. For grooms and wedding parties, richer suit colours, textured accessories and thoughtful layering can work beautifully with the season, too.
And let's not forget the practical side. Even on a mild autumn day in Cornwall or Devon, the temperature can drop quickly once the sun goes down, particularly near the coast. Planning a little extra warmth doesn't mean compromising on style. A chic bridal jacket, a tailored coat or a thoughtful selection of blankets for guests can be both practical and part of the overall aesthetic.
7. The little extras: thoughtful touches your guests will remember
One of the joys of planning an autumn wedding is having so many opportunities to make guests feel looked after. Imagine welcoming everyone with a seasonal cocktail, serving hot chocolate as the evening gets cooler, or gathering around a firepit for a relaxed moment between dancing. S'mores, late-night treats and cosy blankets can all add a little personality without making the day feel over-styled.
These details are particularly lovely for weddings in Cornwall and Devon where couples want to make the most of their venue and its surroundings. A venue with outdoor space, like Knightor Winery or Pirzwell Barn might lend itself to an evening around the fire, while a coastal setting could inspire a menu or drinks reception that celebrates local flavours.
From a planning perspective, we always encourage couples to think about how these extras will fit into the timeline. A hot chocolate station is a wonderful idea, for example, but it works best when it's introduced at the right moment, rather than competing with the evening food or dance floor.
8. The atmosphere: intimate, relaxed and full of feeling
Perhaps our favourite thing about autumn weddings is the atmosphere. There's something special about a room filled with candlelight, the warmth of everyone gathered around a table, and the feeling of the party building as the evening draws in. The combination of cosy corners, seasonal styling and a packed dance floor can make a celebration feel wonderfully intimate, whatever the guest count.

Autumn weddings offer so much more than a seasonal colour palette. They give couples the chance to embrace the landscape, celebrate local food and flowers, and create a day that feels warm, personal and full of character.
